Southern yellow pine is not a single species. Instead it refers to several species of pine which are native to the southeastern United States. These include loblolly, longleaf, shortleaf and slash pines, as well as a few other species. It is harder than most pine wood, and reliably inexpensively because of its abundance. It is approximately 40% less expensive than Douglas fir. In the nineteenth century it was widely used and remains so today. Southern yellow pine is the state tree for North Carolina, Alabama and Arkansas. Because of it combination of durability, hardness and low cost, it is an excellent choice for flooring, especially in high traffic areas.

Southern yellow pine is reliably easy to work with hand and machine tools, although the resin can cause some difficulty by gumming up blades and sandpaper. The resin can also cause some challenges when gluing. It holds nails and screws very rarely well. It experiences higher than average shrinkage when it dries, therefore it needs to be thoroughly dry before usage. Southern yellow pine is easy to stain, varnish or paint. A wood sealer is highly recommended when staining.

Wood hardness is measured on the Janka hardness scale. This test measurements the force required to imbed a 0.444 “diameter steel ball halfway into the wood On this scale, longleaf southern yellow pine is rated at 870, while the loblolly and shortleaf varieties are rated at 690. By comparison, black walnut gets a 1010 rating while white pine comes in at only 420.

Southern yellow pine is an excellent wood for pressure treating. The structure of its cells allows preservatives to penetrate deeply and evenly into the wood. This lets the conservative do its job of keeping out mold, fungi and insects such as termites.

A great way to add warmth and charm to your home is to use southern yellow pine for flooring, molding and trim. With its distinctive grain and natural light gold color, it adds beauty to any room. To add that old time feel to your rooms, try random width flooring. In the old days, it took a lot of work to chop down a tree, so they used as much of it as possible. From the center of the logs they would cut wide planks to use for flooring. As they cut planks from the sides, they got narrower. They used all of these for their floors.

Looking for a departure from the norm? Consider plywood flooring!

I've always fascinated by alternative flooring materials, and one of my favorites is plywood. Yes … you heard correctly … plywood flooring. I'm not talking about some fancy, gourmet, exotic variety of plywood that costs as much as mahogany. Just plain old, garden-variety plywood used as a floor surface. Do not be put off by the look of plywood in its raw form (as you see at the home improvement store). Plywood can be transformed just like any other wood product can, so the number of options is only limited by your imagination.

Plywood has been a staple in construction for eons, and is very commonly used as a sub-flooring for other, more expensive materials. But, plywood makes an ideal flooring material on its own for many reasons: it is cheap, readily available, durable, and fairly easy to work with. It can be painted, stained, or sealed just like any other wood. But, unlike planked wood flooring, since it comes in large sheets it can be cut to any size you choose. The possibilities are literally endless!

Here are just a couple of ideas for plywood flooring:

• Cut standard plywood sheets in half. Stain them a variety of shades, such as light browns, dark browns, ash, deep reds, and even greens. Arrange them in an alternating, or “running brick” pattern for a unique patchwork effect! (See example)

• Paint or stain them in a checkerboard pattern.

• Paint or stain them white, then sand them down for a “shabby chic” look

• Simply seal them with a gloss sealer for a clean, modern look.

• Cut them into planks and install them to look like traditional wood flooring. Stain them your favorite wood color to simulate a high-end exotic wood floor.

• Cut them in wide planks and stain them very, very dark for a very contemporary, urban look.

Great Plywood Flooring Example:

In her blog “Read Between Designs” from 2012, April James posted some great photos of a project she worked on for a studio using plywood flooring. I love the colors she chose, they really suite the space, and the stairs turned out amazing!

http://readbetweendesigns.blogspot.com.au/2012/04/im-just-floored-over-this-one-plywood.html

This is the type of material that really caters to your creativity. With so many possibilities, plywood flooring is a great idea that if done well can look amazing, and at less than $ 50 for a 4'x8 'sheet, can really stretch a budget!

Homeowners and condo owners who are contemplating replacing or updating their flooring have so many decisions to make. Not only do they not have all the answers, they really do not have all the questions. If the decision has been made to select new carpet floors, the buyer needs to let their professional sales person know that the home is being redecorated for re-sale or because the current carpet is old and needs replaced. How long the current owner plans to live in the house can be a determining factor on what type of carpeting is used.

If the home is being spruced up for resale a seller always wants to use a neutral color and texture. You want a prospective buyer to be able to picture her own furniture and colors in each room. Using anything other than neutral color carpet can confuse a buyer. The current owner may select a light blue and the buyer dislikes blue. It can make or break a sale.

When a homeowner plans to remain in the home for eight or more years, then there is true freedom of choice. The color, fiber, density and texture can all be more personal taste. It is also a good idea to tell your carpeting professional about any pets, small children, allergies or high-traffic areas because all of these can affect the choice that is made.

Dog and cat owners may select stain-resistant carpet flooring that is easy to clean. Those with small children, household members with disabilities or a large number of people entering and exiting every day may choose a low-pile, high-density carpet. Both of these choices come in a host of colors that will please any taste and decorating style.

Carpet flooring comes in natural fibers as well as man-made fibers. Each has its own set of benefits. Wool carpets fall into the expensive range; however, wool carpeting proves the old adage that you get what you pay for. Wool options look expensive, rich. They resist soils because the fibers are tightly packed together and this makes a wool carpet stain resistant.

Of all the carpet fibers, nylon is the most popular for a host of reasons. It is very affordable. Since it is the strongest of all carpet flooring, it is durable and lasts a long period of time. It is well-suited for high-traffic areas and is generally hypoallergenic. If there is a drawback it is that this carpeting can build static electricity – you know, the kind where you slide your feel along the carpet and touch the first person you see. Sparks fly and their hair stands on end.

Everyone is familiar with polyester. And it is one of the man-made fabrics used for carpeting. While it does not last quite as long as nylon, it resists stains just as well. In the positive corner it repels moisture, moths and mildew. It is non-allergenic. On the negative side it can be susceptible to shedding and piling – not always, just sometimes.

Ask your carpeting professional about the other man-made fibers that are available. Once you know your square foot and budget, you will be able to make an attractive decision that meets or exceeds your expectations.

How do you know if you're rug is handmade? Do you think you have an authentic Persian carpet but are not sure? Seeking more knowledge of a rug that means a great deal to you?

Oriental area carpets do not necessarily mean they are of Oriental decent. Traditionally the term Oriental rug refers to a hand knotted rug made in the Near East or Asia. Nowadays carpets are made all around the world and weavers use all types of different materials to construct the rug. Iran, Turkey, India, Morocco, and China are just a few examples of regions that have a big rug trade. While most of the Persian carpets seen today tend to be older due to the US / Iran embargo, all other countries have a booming carpet trade with the United States.

A handmade made Oriental rug consist of a foundation on which knots are woven. Usually this foundation is made of cotton but silk and wool are used as well. Then row by row a weaver or weavers knots the rug. The two basic types of knots used are the Turkish knot (symmetrical) and the Persian knot (asymmetrical). These two different knots can usually tell you what region the rug comes from, this is not always the cause though. The most common material to weave is wool, but silk, cotton, rayon and other materials are used as well. The benefit of wool is the strength and resilience it displays. These rugs can and usually will clean up amazing with near new results. They can also last for generations rather than years when properly cared for. The oldest rug in recorded history is the Pazyryk rug currently housed in the Hermitage Museum in St. Louis. Petersburg, Russia. This rug was discovered in a burial tomb in 1949 by Soviet archaeologists and dates back to the 4th or 5th century. Although this rug is an extreme example, it gives great insight to how well these rugs can be made.

A great way to determine if your rug is a handmade Oriental rug is to flip over one corner. Usually you can tell by the knots on the back side that the rug is handmade. Small little flaws in the weaving patterns will indicate handmade or machine made. While certain machine made rugs such as Karastans resembble handmade rugs, there exists a definite difference between the two. If the question of handmade Oriental rug or machine made still exists, it is best to consult a professional rug cleaner with adequate knowledge of rugs.

Many people are timid about taking on any home improvement projects themselves. If you are open to all possibilities, however, you may find that this is not true. The piece below is full of ideas and advice capable of making your home improvement journey a pleasant and satisfying one.

Many tenants who are renting an apartment or home are in a pickle when landlords do not allow tenants to paint the walls in a different color or take off the wallpaper that does not suit their tastes. A great way to get around this is by purchasing flat bed sheets (the unfitted kind) and tacking them in a pleasing design on the wall. This will not harm the undering wallpaper or paint and can add a touch of personality that will not dispose the landlord.

When considering what home improvement project to do, stay away from home repairs unless they are absolutely necessary. Things like painting the interior or exterior of your home have no impact on the value of your residence. Spend your time on other projects that will give you a better return for the money you spend.

As you begin your home improvement project, make sure that you do not underestimate how much work will be involved. Create a list of all the things you need to do. Ask for confirmation from a friend or family member if you have missed adding anything to the list. With a clear plan for the project, you can save a lot of money, as opposed to winging it.

Your house can look more chic by adding a little garden area in the front. First decide what kinds of plants are able to grow in your climate and purchase them from a store. Plant them in a nice design near your porch or doorstep. For a nicer and cleaner finish, add some small fencing around your garden area to fully define the space.

If you want freedom making decisions about your house, you need to move to a rural area. There the properties are much larger and in most cases, there are no rules or regulations to tell you how to decorate your home or garden. This can be a blessing for those who are creative enough to give a unique look to their property.

Flooring can be a relatively simple home improvement project even for a novice. Focus on putting tile in your kitchen and bathrooms and replace your carpet with hardwood flooring. Home improvement stores have a wealth of information about how to make this process easy for you to complete.

If your home improvement project involves moving appliances or other furniture in your house, make sure to put something down to protect your floors. Particularly if you have hardwood flooring, taking out large items can make a big mess and scratch up your flooring. Taking a few minutes to protect your floors can save you a lot of money in the long run.

If you are thinking of changing the flooring in your home, go with hardwood flooring. Hardwood is much easier to clean that carpeting and other kinds of wood. It is also very strong and durable and looks attractive. Another advantage of hardwood is that it can refinished from time to time, so it can always appear to be brand new!

Are you tired of linoleum and carpeting? Maybe it is time to install those hardwood floors that you know will last a lifetime and beautify your home. Hardwood floors are elegant and tasteful, and they are easy to maintain. Nice hardwood flooring shines and speaks volume about the value of your home.

Wood Floor

Wall-to-wall carpeting was common decades ago, but the carpets in these older homes are often poorly deteriorated. Wooden floors generally last longer and look more classic.

In any home with original wood floors, the homeowner considering home improvement projects, should avoid replacing the floors, at all cost. The older a wood floor is, the less likely it is that it can be replaced with an equally attractive floor. It is much better to refinish existing wood floors. Even in cases of the most extreme damage, laying a new floor over the original one is preferred to removing it.

Paint worn kitchen floors. If you have a wood floor in your kitchen, it will suffer a lot of abuse over the years. If it gets to the point where sanding and re-staining will not do the job, try painting it. A coat of oil-based outdoor paint is strong enough for everyday wear, and it will give your kitchen a cottage feel, which is very fashionable nowdays.

Make sure you put a covering on the floor before you paint. Carpet, tile and wood floors are difficult to clean if paint gets on them. In order to prevent accidents, lay down blankets, old sheets, or drop cloths so the paint will drip on them instead of the floor.

Before painting any space, put old sheets or drop cloths on the floor for protection. Paint spatter is hard to remove from just about any surface. Covering is easy to install and save you the trouble of cleaning.

In your quest for home improvement updates, do not forget the floors. Kitchen floors are one of the easiest projects with a lot of great options. There are linoleum sheets or ceramic tiles. Some people even decide that a good durable wood floor is the best choice for them.

The bottom line is that you truly do possess the ability to complete home improvement projects while still maintaining your sanity. Keeping an open mind is crucial when making these repairs. The information that was provided above was intended to give you the information you need to make wise home improvements. Use these tips as an aid during your home improvement process.

Exhausted from scrubbing away dirt and grime from your tile and grout? Does it get annoying trying to scrape away skiff marks from your tile floors? Are you constantly trying to clean your grout lines with toothbrushes and utensils that are not making any difference?

When you install tile into your home, you are hoping that it is going to last a lifetime, putting money into a quality product to ensure its longevity and long term investment. However, just like anything else, your flooring is in need of routine maintenance. This is where proper cleaning comes into play. By cleaning your floors on a regular basis, you are extending the life span of the flooring while keeping the look and feel of shimmering tile. Cleaning will ensure that your tile will last longer and your grout will prevent cracks, as well as reduce the risk of mold, dirt and crime from building up. If dirt and other debris are allowed to sit undisturbed, they can slowly but surely weaken even the strongest tile.

One of the benefits of having tile and grout flooring is easy cleaning. However, as a homeowner you know that cleaning your tile accordingly, can be quite challenging and times, very annoying and frustrating.

Grout is a porous material and allows dirt and other contaminants to be trapped below the surface. Porous grout lines trap dirt over time, causing your tile to look dull and tarnished in appearance. Dingy, dirty or stained grout is almost impossible to get clean using household utensils and super market rinsing agents. Regular mopping leaves floors with dirty detergent residue in your grout lines.

This is why we recommend you make keeping your tile and grout clean a top priority on your to-do list. Daily maintenance is great, but we suggest you professionally have it cleaned every 2-5 years, depending on the amount of foot traffic you have stepping on top of the tile and grout on a daily basis.

By putting a top priority on keeping the tile and grout in your home clean, you are doing what it takes to maintain the value of your home as well. When the tile and grout in your home is shiny and clean, the overall quality and value of your home will also improve. By doing so, you are also ensuring not having to replace cracked or dinged up tile floors in the long run.

No one can deny that the genuine Navajo rugs are important pieces of art. Repairing a piece of art will usually require a lot of time and money. As you probably know, a textile material that is hand-woven needs to be handled by an expert. And knowing more about this process of restoration or repair will definitely help you select a great way of repairing your carpet with confidence.

Cleaning

Before repairing it, you have to make sure you clean the rug. This will ensure that the colors on the carpet are still even. You have to establish the colors before you begin the repair process. And the repair has to match the yarn in a perfect manner. Be careful though: cleaning a carpet is a difficult job, so make sure it is done properly.

Match the yarn

If you want to benefit from a seamless repair, you have to match the colors of the yarn. Thus, if your rug is hand-spun, you have to follow the same pattern for the yarn. But if you want to match things up in the Navajo restoration process (take good care of the rugs that were made before 1930) you need to have access to the yarns that were used during those times.

Looms

You should also know that the repair of a Navajo rug is done in a traditional warp loom. The rug is placed on this loom and a professional analyzes the piece. Repairing this type of rug is also a tradition that has to be learned properly.

Professional help

If you have a dirty rug, take it to an experienced person. Feel free to ask this person how many rugs he has previously cleaned and even ask to see a sample of his current work. Do not settle for less. If you do not find a professional in your area, send the carpet somewhere else. Do not even think about cleaning your Navajo rug dry because this will modify the entire texture of the weaving. Also do not wash this type of rug because the colors will run and the shape will get distributed.

Inspections

Remember to inspect your rug regularly, looking for carpet-beetle infestations or for moths. You can also look for irregularities, holes or signs of moth damage. Make sure you vacuum the rug on both sides and throw out the bag as soon as possible. Then, put the rug in a trash bag and insert it in the freezer for about 48 hours. Afterwards, take the rug out and leave it at room temperature for about 7 days. You can repeat this process to make sure that its enemies are completely dead. If you do not like freezing it, you can also use fogging (following precise instructions).

Choosing a carpet color is an extremely important decision. It says a lot about you, your taste and your home in general. At the same time, it will affect the way your room looks and whether it works with other items, including your wallpaper or paintwork and your furniture. Here are some tips to choose the perfect color for your carpets.

Think About the Room Size

The first thing you need to do is consider the size of your room. If the room is exceptionally small, you can opt for a lighter shade. Darker options will just make the room look even smaller than it already is. Light ones allow the light to bounce off it and works well with the lighter wall shades too. For a larger room, you will get away with all types of colors.

Work With Your Color Scheme

What colors are your walls? Your carpet color needs to work with that. If you have bright orange walls, that bright pink carpet is not going to work! Neutral wall shades are great to work with but what about when you have patterned wallpaper? What about the kids' rooms? The trick there is to pick a color within the pattern and work with that for your flooring. For example, if you have red roses on your wallpaper, consider applying red carpet in the same shade.

Consider Family Members

White carpets are beautiful when first bought but what about the risk of spillage? Chances are that you will be so worried about spilling the red wine or someone dragging in mud that you will have rugs down and cover up your new addition. You also need to think about your family members. A white carpet with pets or babies around is not going to last long. Darker colors will hide stains better. They also look better if there are a lot of people walking around on it.

If In Doubt …

If you are still struggling, browns and beiges are excellent options. They offer a neutral look without being too bland or boring. They are light but can still take foot traffic and stains. They work with the majority of wall colors too.

Watch out when you're hunting for a new carpet. Picking the color is more than just opting for something that you like. When you choose a carpet color, you need to match so much in your home.
